Whether you choose a raft or a kayak, this route will stay with you for a long time. Here’s everything you need to know about it!
The trip in numbers: how long does it take, and how many kilometers do we cover?
Before we hit the water, here’s a quick technical tip. The route from Sromowce Niżne is slightly shorter than the one starting from Kąty, making it perfect for a fast-paced adventure.
| Parameter | Route details |
| Route length | about 12 kilometers |
| Travel time | 1.5 to 2 hours (depending on the water level and paddling speed) |
| Mountain range | Central Pieniny (Pieniny National Park) |
| Endpoint | Rafting/Kayaking Marina in Szczawnica |
Breathtaking views: Trzy Korony and Sokolica
Starting from Sromowce Niżne, you’re immediately immersed in breathtaking views. You’ll float through a deep canyon, where limestone cliffs rise straight out of the water to heights of up to 300 meters!
Sokolica: A short distance further on, you’ll pass the most famous sacred mountain in the Pieniny. If you look up high, with a little luck you’ll spot the legendary, ancient pine tree that has stood proudly on the rocky ridge for centuries.
Three Crowns: A majestic peak (982 m above sea level) towers over the start of the trail. Viewed from the river, its jagged, rocky cliffs appear imposing and monumental.
Rafting Tales: Humor and Legends from the River's Current
A rafting trip down the Dunajec River isn’t just about nature—it’s above all about the incredible atmosphere created by the river’s people. For generations, the rafters of the Pieniny Mountains have passed down stories that they love to share with tourists. As you travel this route, you’re sure to hear about a few iconic spots:
The depth of the Dunajec: Rafters like to joke that the river is so shallow it’s “knee-deep for a duck,” but the truth is that in the so-called “bany” (deep pools at the bends), the water can be as deep as 9 to 12 meters!
Zbójnicki Skok: This is the narrowest point along the route (the river is only about 10–12 meters wide here). Legend has it that it was here that Janosik, fleeing from Hungarian gendarmes, leaped across the Dunajec River, and the imprint of his boots can still be seen on the rock today.
The “Seven Peasants” Rocks: Distinctive rock formations which, according to rafters’ tales, are… monks turned to stone as punishment for trying to pick forbidden herbs from the slopes of Trzy Korony.
Why should you choose rafting or kayaking on this route?
A traditional rafting trip is great, but it’s the inflatable rafting or kayaking excursions that offer complete independence and real fun. The Dunajec River in this section can give you a pleasant ride; the current carries you along, and navigating around huge boulders and battling the waves as a team is a brilliant test of teamwork.
The Sromowce Niżne–Szczawnica route is the perfect mix: safe for beginners, yet exciting enough to get your heart racing.
A quick tip to wrap things up: The season on the Dunajec River runs from April to October. Be sure to pack a change of clothes—you’ll want to be ready for a blast and a few drops of mountain water!
See you on the water!
